Outlawing Competition: Swedish Education Edition
These kind of stories give me the willies : Mike Farris says that Sweden will ban all home schooling except for children with medical exemptions and foreign workers with the appropriate work visas. “That’s it. People who have religious convictions or are home schooling for religious reasons will not be given one of these very rare exemptions,” he points out. “And so for all intents and purposes, home schooling is going to be banned in Sweden. They’re following the German statute, following th

Spiritual Armor and Social Justice
Fr. Fox, the best blogging priest on the ‘nets, posted his recent talks for a homeschooling conference. Go and read; perusing Fr. Fox’s homilies and speeches is like taking a mini-retreat. From his talk on equipping your children with spiritual armor : Paul tells us our Faith is a shield. There are a lot of things to say about Faith, but let me highlight three aspects.

Creationism and Child Custody
Recently in North Carolina, a mother homeschooling her children was ordered to enroll them in public school . This despite the fact, acknowledged by everyone involved, that they’re flourishing and are two grades ahead of their peers. Why? Because she’s apparently teaching her children creationism rather than evolution. The article doesn’t make clear whether she’s teaching them young-earth creationism or old-earth (or even theistic evolution, which is labeled as “creationism” by atheists). But e

You will all become one with the Borg
Another from our friend Bubba: A North Carolina judge has ordered three children to attend public schools this fall because the homeschooling their mother has provided over the last four years needs to be “challenged.” The children, however, have tested above their grade levels – by as much as two years. The decision is raising eyebrows among homeschooling

A Sunflower House
I love Sunflowers. I love gardening (not that I am very good at it). I love working with children. Combine all these and you come up with my latest project. And as of yesterday afternoon it is official. I met and received permission from the parks department. We -those families from our homeschool group who choose to participate -will be building a Sunflower House at the local park where we have our Park Day gathering. The house will have a variety of types of sunflowers as well as morning

Time Away
Homeschooling means I spend a lot of time with my kids. So, when school is done in the afternoon, I like to give them some time and space away from me. And me away from them. I usually do chores around the house while the kids head for the Wii. Later I’ll sit down at my computer to read email or work on various projects. Yesterday, about an hour after school ended, my son wandered into my office and plopped down in the armchair. I asked him, “What do you need?” “Oh, nothing, I just wanted t

Just Checking In
I’ve been in bed for the past 3 days with Strep throat. Haven’t seen my kids much at all during that time, but they have impressed me to no end. Maya and Elena have been running the house by themselves. Maya has cooked all the meals and Elena has taken charge of getting homeschooling, or at least chores done. (The second day, Kyle said: Gimme a break, Ginger, they don’t have to do school for a couple of days! lol He doesn’t share my obsession with structure and productivity.) Will be back soon t
