Why Gmail Is The Only “Real” Email
I lead a youth group. Most of these young men and women think that having an email address is basically laughable. But for a busy, work-at-home, homeschooling, 30-something mom, email is still an absolutely indispensable part of life. And in the two years that I’ve had a Gmail account, I’ve basically abandoned all my other email providers and gone full-on Gmail addiction. Reasons: Gmail provides a way to check all other emails (except Yahoo) from one address. And I have a LOT of diff

I’m Not Talking To Myself…I’m Having A Parent/Teacher Conference!
Having been a homeschooling family for pretty much all of my sons’ educational careers has left me with a few nagging questions. There are certain “quirks” my kids have that I never know whether to chalk up to their individual personalities or to the fact that they haven’t had the opportunity to have those idiosyncrasies teased, mocked, or beat out of them on a daily basis. One in particular that is starting to cause me some consternation is H-T’s constant need to talk to himself. He starte

VBS: An Encouragement to Homeschool
There are a few questions that, if I had been paid a dollar for each time I was asked them, would have made me very rich by now. I’m sure you’ve heard the same: “Are you certified to teach?” “What about socialization?” “What about Physics?” “You’ll send them to real school at some point, right?” and if you have a larger family “Are they ALL yours?” But the real money-makers for me would be “You must be so organized” and “You must have the patience of a saint”. Right. Now, you ar

Blogging is so Incestuous!
And yes, of course, I used that title to increase my blog traffic for today. But I’m in Florida as this “goes to press” so just try to find me and make me change it. Ha! Anyway… I’ve been discovering some great new blogs. And I was so proud of myself. Until, of course, I saw that most of you found them before I did. Haven’t you noticed that we homeschoolers – – especially us “out there” ones (hee) tend to run in the same circles?? I guess it is only natural that if we like each ot

To Raise Your Hand or Not Volunteer
Volunteer… A simple word found toward the end of a dictionary and often found at the end of a homeschool mom’s list as well. It is a word that can cause us to shudder as we ponder our already full schedules, yet volunteering can be a positive experience if approached at the right time and place in our lives. Volunteer possibilities come in all shapes and sizes which can be personal, homeschool related, church, or even community based. It may be in the form of babysitting for a friend or wate

Summer is so…so…unstructured, isn’t it? I guess that is a good thing, because we all need some “unstructured,” right? But what about us ADD-types? I’m beginning to think that there is such a thing as TOO much unstructured. My exercising, for instance, has gone the way of the dinosaur. During regular homeschooling months, I always fit the exercising right into part of my daily schedule. Now, I just wait for the wind to blow my stair-stepper in my direction (so far, the winds are pretty cal

Raising Children to Live a Normal Life
While reading Little Homeschool on the Prairie’s review of the documentary Grown Without School , a quote captured my attention: There is a myth that through homeschooling you can achieve…more than a normal life. I want to raise the next George Washington, Albert Einstein, or, for a current example, Ravi Zacharias. In my dream, my children are famous, and make a positive impact as salt and light in the lives of multitudes. Maybe this will happen, but, most likely, they will live a nor

Homeschooling In A Military Family
As more and more families across the nation decide it’s time for change and bring their children home for school, so goes the way of military families as well. There is no set number carved in stone but the numbers have risen substantially in the past few years. Many families are lost in a sea of Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) memoranda and can’t tell heads or tales of the hoopla they are trying desperately to decode. I have been there and done that! Literally! We are a militar

Cancun is Highly Overrated
I have officially come to the end of the first week of Topsy-Techie spring break. No homeschooling. No work. No worries. I barely even opened up my computer except to veg out to some older episodes of House and Everwood. There was lots of hiking and searching out waterfalls. I offer the following evidence… Wildcat Branch Falls Long Shoals Twin Falls Issaqueena Falls Now I know that for a lot of people a couple decades younger than myself, you haven’t HAD sp

unschooling… doing nothing?
Posted on Mar 18th, 09 under Unschooling | 18MarWhen I wrote the definition of unschooling a few weeks ago I handed it out at the local homeschooling meeting in hope that the philosophy around it would be a bit more understood… I found out yesterday though that it really wasn’t…I agree that to the outsider, unschooling doesn’t look like the parent is doing much… you are not technically sitting and teaching a few hours a day… you might not have as many ways to “show” what your kids are learning
